I think that the most interesting subject discussed during T.L. Taylor’s talk was that of the performance of masculinity. More specifically, the decision that many individuals make to choose the ‘geek masculinity’ in order to opt out of sporting culture. I think that T.L. Taylor is right when she (and Prof. Stabile) claim that the discussion of masculinity and its various forms and roles is necessary to fully understand why it is that women still do not get a fair deal in the realm of video games. I would certainly not claim that there is no longer a need to discuss femininity, or that men struggle in the same manner that women do in contemporary society, but I feel that both must be discussed if any significant progress is to be made as it would provide a more fully rendered picture of the role of gender in society.
